Competition Rules


The Jacques Lancelot Clarinet Competition goal is to pay a tribute to one of the greatest clarinetists of the 20th Century.


Date : 20th to 27th October, 2016
Location : « Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Rouen » (50 avenue de la porte des champs, F-76000 Rouen, France) and the « Théâtre des Arts » (7 rue du Docteur Rambert, F-76000 Rouen, France).


Clarinetists of all nationality born between 20th October, 1981 and 20th October, 1998 may participate.
Finalists of the previous editions of the Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition, except the First Prize winners, are exempted from pre-selection. However, registration is still required.
First Prize winners of the previous editions of the Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition are not allowed to participate.


Delay and terms

Registration will be dealt with exclusively online on the website : The procedure includes an online payable fee of 120€. The fee is non refundable. At the end of the procedure, a print of the form must be filled in. The deadline for registration is 29th february, 2016.
After signing up, candidates must send the following by post :
- a print of the online form filled in and signed;
- a print of the fulfill program information sheet (download here);
- a black and white passport size photo (for the press kit) ;
- a biography and a resume (vitae), in French or in English ;
- photocopy of identity papers (passport, or National ID card for members of the European Union) ;
- a CD with a recording of the pieces requested for the preselection round, with no inscription allowing an identification ;
- a letter vouching for the authenticity of the recording.
These must be postmarked by 29th february, 2016 at the latest, to the following address : Concours International de Clarinette Jacques Lancelot, 15 rue du Vallon, F-76840 Hénouville, France.

Validation and notification of registration

- Registration will be final once the form is filled, the fee payed, the full candidate folder has been received at the association, and after the execution board has validated it.
- A notification of the final registration will be sent to candidates via E-mail.
- The Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition will not be prosecutable in the event that a form isn't received.


- The program of the works will be available on the website from 1st October, 2015.
- Candidates must perform on genuine sheet music. Photocopies are prohibited (law extracts « loi du 11/03/1957, code pénal article 425 et loi du 30/06/1994 »).
- The music sheet of the clarinet part of the original work from Fuminori Tanada (concerto for clarinet and orchestra) edited by IMD may be purchased from january 1st, 2016, at Arpèges (123 rue Lamarck, 75018 Paris, France). This work may not be performed in public before it has been premiered during the final of the Competition.
- The Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition will not be held responsible in the event of frauding from the candidates.


- The competition will be held in four parts : preselection from a CD, two eliminatory phases (first round and semi-final) and a final with an orchestra.
- Aside from the preselection round, all of the events are opened to the public.
- The order in which candidates will be called will be determined at the beginning of the first round and will remain fixed for the 6 days of events.
- The jury will be working with a strict set of rules, its decisions are irrevocable.
- The jury's composition can be changed in the event that one of the members stands down.


- The canditates will be preselected from their CDs. The CD must not bear any inscription identifying the author.
- The recording must be free from all editing or technical modifications.

First Round

- A notice to attend will be sent by Email to each candidate accepted into the first round, informing them of the location, date and times of the rehearsal with piano.
- The candidates must present themselves on Thursday 20th October, 2016 between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm at the secretariat of the competition (based at the CRR of Rouen, 50 avenue de la porte des champs, F-76000 Rouen, France), to confirm their participation.
- In the event a candidate wishes to drop out, inform the secretariat by Email (
- If a candidate is late, the decision to let them compete belongs to the jury. Its decisions are irrevocable.
- The events will be held between 22th, 23th and 24th October, 2016 at the CRR of Rouen, 50 avenue de la porte des champs, F-76000 Rouen, France).

Semi final

- The events will be held 25th and 26th October, 2016 at the CRR (50 avenue de la porte des champs, F-76000 Rouen, France).


- The final will be held 27th October, 2016 at the Théatre des Arts (7 rue du Docteur Rambert, F76000 Rouen, France).


- Training rooms will be made available for the candidates from 20th October, 2016 and during the entire competition. A planning for the usage of these rooms will be established by the management of the competition.
- For each candidate, a rehearsal with piano is planned to prepare for the first round and the semi final. An extra rehearsal is possible depending on availabilities from the accompanists at the expense of the candidate. The participants can also decide to be accompanied by the pianist of their choice, at their own expense.
- For the three finalists, rehearsals with the Orchestra of the Rouen Opera is planned Wednesday 26th October, 2016, short rehersals Thursday 27th October, 2016 in the morning.

Journey and accomodation

- The journey and the accomodation are at the expense of the candidates.

Recording and broadcasting

The management of the competition reserves the right to record all or part of the events, photograph or film the candidates for advertising, archiving, television or radio broadcasting, while respecting the rights of French musicians (article L212-3 du code de la propriété intellectuelle).

Rights and duty of the candidates

- Registration to the competition is also the candidate's engagement to participate to the touring attached to the First Prize, in the event that they win the competition.
- Failure to respect the rules of the competition is punishable by disqualification, in agreement with the President of the jury.


- The awarding of the First Prize will be carried out in two parts at the end of the competition, and at the end of the last concert of the day.
- The awarding of the Second and Third Prize will be carried out at the end of the competition.
